A young dog can only take so much. But a German Shepherd mix named Teddy has taken more than his share of life’s challenges.
Initially, Teddy’s life was optimistic. A family adopted him to rescue him from being euthanized. But when things started to look up, the pup ran away from his fur parents and lived in the wilderness during the next seven months.
Thanks to some volunteers, Teddy got reunited with his family. Here’s the pup’s amazing story.
The day Teddy ran away
A couple named Rozhaja Doci and Della Monica adopted Teddy in 2021, and they all led a happy family life in Washington, D.C. The couple believed that Teddy was already socially comfortable, so they took him on a trip to visit their family in Pennsylvania. This was where the couple’s nightmare started.
It became clear, though, that Teddy wasn’t ready yet for big gatherings. As a result, he escaped by running through an opening in the backyard’s fence. His anxious family searched for him to no avail.
Seven months passed, and Teddy still wasn’t home. But Rozhaja and Della didn’t lose hope. After all, Teddy had been microchipped.
Teddy’s back!
Thanks to Teddy’s microchip, Rozhaja and Della received a call from an animal organization called Dog Rescue and Recovery in New Jersey. The said shelter found the pup.
It became clear that Teddy’s seven-month journey covered a distance of 80 miles. He crisscrossed the rural area of Pennsylvania, scavenging for food and enduring the harsh weather and terrain.
The group who rescued Teddy found him in a rough shape. The vet told the couple that Teddy had a broken tailbone and bilateral hip dysplasia. Sadly, one of his legs was rendered non-functional.
Della explained that Teddy was likely hit by a vehicle, which resulted in his bad leg. There were also bullet fragments in his body, which might have come from someone hunting birds.
Currently, Teddy is nursing his injuries. He still surely has a long way to go as far as his recovery is concerned. On the brighter side, he’s already home, and Rozhaja and Della’s love will see him through.
