Good Samaritans in Los Angeles, California spotted a homeless dog sprinting through the busy streets. They also noticed he limped when he walked so they assumed he had a broken leg and needed medical help. They lured the dog toward them and looked after him while they searched for help.
Eventually, the Good Samaritans learned about the charitable group in the city called Hope For Paws. They didn’t expect to get a response right away but they sent them an email anyway. To their surprise, JoAnn Wiltz, a volunteer worker, headed out and met them at the soonest possible time.
JoAnn didn’t have to do much to try and catch the dog because the kind neighbors had him secured when she arrived. But when she saw him, she knew she had to take him to the vet right away. She got him into her car and then drove him straight to the clinic and named him Smitty.
The young dog, which was no more than two years old, was so happy to be with humans. He, however, was more delighted to know that he was on his way to a better life. He couldn’t contain his excitement, but he was such a well-behaved dog, too, so he sat down as JoAnn started to drive.
Smitty underwent an extensive examination and the vets were happy to reveal that he had no broken or dislocated leg. Rather, he was diagnosed with radial agenesis, which means he doesn’t have a radius bone on his right leg.
The Husky’s right leg hangs weird and he is not able to use it for walking but it helps him keep his balance. It also doesn’t cause him any pain or discomfort. It’s not normal, that’s for sure, but it’s his eccentricity and that’s what makes him more charming.
Without the need for any surgery, Smitty continued to his foster home with Hollywood Huskies, a non-profit rescue group in Southern California. And within two weeks or so, he was off to his forever home.
Smitty may be different but he proved that no disability can hinder anyone from being happy. He chose to live life and he’s grateful that his new dad came and gave him that opportunity.
