Dogs are famous for their strong motherly instincts. They would do everything to protect and nurture their offspring. But it’s rare for them to extend this powerful drive towards puppies that are not their own, much more so with other species.
This makes Molly, a beagle, so unique. When she lost her entire litter a few days after giving birth to them, she found an unexpected way to relieve her broken heart.
Improbable pair
Molly lives in Victoria, Australia, with her owners. Their home is built on a vast property that reaches the nearby woods. One day, the beagle was walking around their backyard when she came across an abandoned baby possum.
The dog had been very sad for the past few days, constantly looking for her babies, who had all died. They were buried near the woods.
Molly went near the little creature to investigate. Then suddenly, the possum climbed onto the dog’s back. She didn’t mind at all. And ever since, they have become inseparable.
Molly’s owners said they were surprised to see how affectionate the two are. The possum most likely thought that the pooch was her mom. And Molly’s motherly instincts naturally took over. When the pet owners realized that the two adored being around each other, they named the possum Poss.
Love and care
The two creatures spend most of their time in the yard. Poss would cling to Molly’s back as they moved around. As possums are nocturnal animals, her surrogate mom would patiently wait by the tree where the little critter sleeps.
Molly’s owners are unsure if the possum will stay by their dog’s side when she becomes an adult. They are just glad that they have found one another and are having a grand time.
The story of the unlikely pair has gone viral, and many people have expressed their delight in this unusual relationship.
