Hope For Paws, a non-profit rescue group in LA, received a call about a homeless dog that lived near a freeway. Many people tried to save the dog but it escaped all the time.
Knowing how dangerous the situation was for the dog, the group’s founder, Eldad Hagar, and his fellow rescuer, JoAnn Wiltz, headed out the following morning to save the dog.
The rescuers gently but quickly went to work. They feared the dog would run away once it sees them, but surprisingly, it stayed inside the enclosed area. Still, they had to be careful.
Eldad decided to let JoAnn approach the animal first to avoid scaring it. JoAnn offered the hungry pooch food, and in no time secured it with a Lucky Leash. Eldad then slowly approached the two and started building trust with the dog by giving it food as well.
The rescuers then devised a plan to bring the dog out of the fenced-off space. Eldad instructed JoAnn to get inside the area through a scalable wall to retrieve the animal. While she did that, he kept the pooch distracted and made sure it had no chance of running away.
JoAnn successfully scaled the low partition and secured the dog. With Eldad’s help from the other side of the fence, she guided the animal back to where she entered the space. Carefully, the rescuers managed to get the dog out of the enclosed area safely.
The rescue partners decided to name the dog Julian. Seeing how scared Julian was, Eldad and JoAnn carefully placed him inside their vehicle, reassuring him that he was finally safe. The rescuers then whisked Julian to CARES, a veterinary facility.
At CARES, JoAnn and fellow volunteer Alex Babcock cleaned Julian up and readied him for his medical checkup. Once the rescuers saw his X-rays, they realized why Julian ran away even from people who wished to help. It was because he had BB gun pellets embedded all over his body.
Fortunately, none of Julian’s injuries were severe, and healed in no time. The Little Red Dog, a foster-based animal rescue organization, took Julian in and helped him learn how to trust people again. Julian now looks forward to being part of his own forever family.
